There are three ways to connect your lead acid batteries—parallel, series, and a combination known as series/parallel. We cover each of these battery configurations in greater detail in our Battery Basics tutorial section of the site should you want to delve in a little deeper or reinforce what you already know.
The less current is delivered by a lead battery, the longer the battery lasts. The series connection of two identical batteries allows to get twice the rated voltage of the individual batteries, keeping the same capacity.
Charge will flow from one battery to the other two until they’re balanced. With a lead acid battery bank, the internal resistances are limiting to a point that you don’t have to worry about arcing or your battery cables overheating when you connect them (not the case with lithium-ion banks…).
Check your battery chemistries – Sealed Lead Acid batteries for example have different charge points than flooded lead acid units. This means that if recharging the two together, some batteries will never fully charge. The result here would be sulfation of those that never reach a full state of charge, reducing their lifespan.
There are two ways to wire batteries together, parallel and series. The illustration below show how these wiring variations can produce different voltage and amp hour outputs. In the graphics we’ve used sealed lead acid batteries but the concepts of how units are connected is true of all battery types.
Connecting a battery in series is when you connect two or more batteries together to increase the battery systems overall voltage, connecting batteries in series does not increase the capacity only the voltage. For example if you connect four 12Volt 26Ah batteries you will have a battery voltage of 48Volts and battery capacity of 26Ah.

Lead/Acid is less sensitive than Lithium-based systems, though -- you never see "Balancing wires" for the series cells in a car battery. In general, for the longest lifetimes and best control, you want one charge management circuit per battery chemistry, and ideally per battery (there may be benefits even within the same chemistry.)
How to Wire 12V Batteries in Series
Use a battery cable to connect the two batteries'' positive terminals together. I recommend using a red battery cable for this connection. Step 2: Connect the Negative …
HOW TO: Upgrade Your Boat to a Lithium Battery

Mixing Gel and Lead acid batteries, possible
you can absolutely have different batteries in the same bank as long as they are in parallel, the problems arise when they are in series at fast charge rates. just get a feel for how your batteries perform in every aspect so you can tell when a battery goes bad on its own, as it would anyway. a gel battery is a type of lead acid btw. they work the same, but perform better long term at …

The Battery Balancer equalizes the state of charge of two series connected 12V batteries, or of several parallel strings of series connected batteries. When the charge voltage of a 24V battery system increases to more than 27V, the Battery Balancer will turn on and compare the voltage over the two series connected batteries.

How Does Lead-Acid Batteries Work?
Lead-acid batteries are prone to a phenomenon called sulfation, which occurs when the lead plates in the battery react with the sulfuric acid electrolyte to form lead sulfate (PbSO4). Over time, these lead sulfate crystals can build up on the plates, reducing the battery''s capacity and eventually rendering it unusable. ...
