The number of electric LDVs per public charging point increases from around 10 in 2023 to around 15 in 2035 in the APS, remaining lower than other major markets. Currently, China has one of the highest shares of fast chargers out of total public charging stock, at around 45%.
Within this context, four countries stand out for hosting Europe’s largest charging stations. Germany currently boasts more than 100,000 public points for electric cars. On the other hand, the Netherlands has more than 123,000 installed units.
Like slow chargers, public fast chargers also provide charging solutions to consumers who do not have reliable access to private charging, thereby encouraging EV adoption across wider swaths of the population. The number of fast chargers increased by 330 000 globally in 2022, though again the majority (almost 90%) of the growth came from China.
Anyone who’s lived with an EV will tell you that public electric car charging stations can be rewarding or frustrating in equal measure; basic reliability is a key factor, of course, but the cost of charging varies much more than petrol or diesel prices, too.
DATS 24, the energy and fuel provider for the Colruyt Group, has inaugurated Belgium’s largest station. This consists of 109 charging points located in the parking lot of the Colruyt Group headquarters in Halle. It has a total of 54 22 kW charging stations and one fast charger with a 60 kW capacity.
China accounts for total of 760 000 fast chargers, but more than 70% of the total public fast charging pile stock is situated in just ten provinces. In Europe the overall fast charger stock numbered over 70 000 by the end of 2022, an increase of around 55% compared to 2021.
