The results of this study indicated that China, as one of the fast-growing countries in the global south, shows outstanding potential for solar PV power station installation and generation potential.
Since 2009, the Chinese government has taken a series of measures to promote solar PV installation in China. In March 2009, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development initiated the first national PV program to subsidize BIPV systems larger than 50 kWp with 0.2 RMB/Wp (equivalent to 0.12–0.20 RMB/kWh).
Solar radiation data from more than 2400 stations are used to reassess the solar PV potential in China. The annual technical potentials on both county and provincial scales are derived. Three scenarios of different mounting methods for solar PV panels are considered.
According to the projection of Chinese scholar, the total electricity demand of China will reach at least 15 PWh by 2060, and thus 20.6% of the total technical potential of solar PV power generation can be developed to meet this electricity demand. Fig. 11.
Land use policy for developing PV solar farms in China. Different from most developed countries, in China, urban lands are owned by the country, and rural lands are collective ownership. For this reason, the development of PV solar farms highly relies on the land use policy introduced by the government.
In 2022 , China's new PV installation was 87.41GW(AC), up 59.3% year-on-year. Among them, utility PV installed 36.3GW, up 41.8% year-on-year while distributed PV installed 51.1GW, up 74.5% year-on-year. In 2022, the new distributed PV installations reached more than half of the annual new PV installations in 2022.
