Batteries may be classified as hazardous waste in some EU countries. The batteries have to be marked with the crossed wheel bin symbol.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has developed several essential standards—IEC 61960, IEC 62133, IEC 62619, and IEC 62620—that govern the design, testing, and utilization of lithium batteries. This guide provides a detailed overview of these standards, highlighting their significance in the industry.
The technical documentation should contain information (e.g. description of the lithium battery and its intended use) that makes it possible to assess the lithium battery’s conformity with the requirements of the regulation. The regulation lists the required documentation in Annex VIII.
Lithium-ion batteries, which contain electronic modules as battery management units and which are subject to the EMC directive 2014/30/EU, must be approved and must wear the CE marking.
The General Product Safety Regulation covers safety aspects of a product, including lithium batteries, which are not covered by other regulations. Although there are harmonised standards under the regulation, we could not find any that specifically relate to batteries.
