This Special Topic issue of Applied Physics Letters “New Technologies and New Applications of Advanced Batteries” features recent advances in new materials, technologies, and applications of batteries that have the potential to revolutionize the field and enable more challenging applications.
To overcome this challenge, researchers are exploring ways to improve the energy density and overall performance of these batteries through material modification, optimization of the battery design, and intelligent upgrades to battery management systems (BMSs) (Figure 19) .
Modern battery technology offers a number of advantages over earlier models, including increased specific energy and energy density (more energy stored per unit of volume or weight), increased lifetime, and improved safety .
In addressing these challenges, the paper reviews emerging battery technologies, such as solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and flow batteries, shedding light on their potential to surpass existing limitations.
By using a hybrid methodology that combines DTM and content analysis, this study identifies major advancements in battery materials, design, and manufacturing, highlighting innovations such as solid-state and lithium–sulphur batteries as well as improvements in lithium-ion chemistries.
Motivated by the 1970s energy crisis, it examines existing battery chemistries (lead–acid, nickel–cadmium) and emerging systems like sodium–sulphur and lithium-based batteries. Findings suggest batteries are crucial for future energy storage, addressing energy density and cost challenges.
