An aluminum electrolytic capacitor consists of a wound capac-itor element, impregnated with liquid electrolyte, connected to terminals and sealed in a can. See Figures 1 and 2. Voltage ratings are classified as < 100 VDC for low voltage, 101-250 for mid-voltage and 251-700 for high voltage.
In applications where high withstanding voltages are needed, electrolytic capacitors can be connected in series. Because of individual variation in insulation resistance, and thus the leakage current when voltage is applied, the voltage is not distributed evenly across each series capacitor.
Standard electrolytic capacitors, and aluminium as well as tantalum and niobium electrolytic capacitors are polarized and generally require the anode electrode voltage to be positive relative to the cathode voltage. Nevertheless, electrolytic capacitors can withstand for short instants a reverse voltage for a limited number of cycles.
Today, electrolytic capacitors with large capacitance, i.e. large can type, can be found in many applications such as in electrical systems, power supplies, chargers and on printed circuit boards. The variants range from applications with high ripple current or high temperatures to requirements for a service life of 10,000 hours at 105 °C.
The dielectric thickness of electrolytic capacitors is very small, in the range of nanometers per volt. On the other hand, the voltage strengths of these oxide layers are quite high. With this very thin dielectric oxide layer combined with a sufficiently high dielectric strength the electrolytic capacitors can achieve a high volumetric capacitance.
