The aim is to improve battery performance and extend the range of electric cars. According to NXP, the wireless ultra-wideband battery management system, or UWB-BMS for short, simplifies the assembly of electric vehicles. It enables a higher energy density of the battery and can therefore increase the range of electric cars.
NXP’s Ultra-Wideband wireless battery management system solution is available for OEMs to start evaluation and development in Q2 2025. The solution is part of NXP’s FlexCom chipset which supports wired and wireless technologies, providing OEMs and Tier-1-suppliers with greater flexibility in vehicle architecture and technology choices.
A wireless battery management system (wBMS) is a system that reduces mechanical complications and associated expenses associated with conventional wiring harness systems. wBMS are lighter and more compact than harnessed batteries. They maximize energy use per cell, leading to increased mileage per charge.
The BJB is part of NXP’s complete turnkey battery management system offering and can be used with wired and wireless battery management solutions, alongside NXP’s software and applications, without the need for manufacturers to enlist additional partners.
NXP’s UWB wireless BMS technology decouples mechanical and electrical development, offering EV manufacturers increased flexibility, faster time to market and reduced development costs – while maintaining full scalability of the system across different platforms.
Wireless communication within battery packs enables robust and reliable transmission of battery cell information such as voltage and temperature measurements from a module to the battery management unit without the need for cabling, NXP explains the benefits of the technology.
