The nickel-iron battery construction is shown in Figure. A Nickel-Iron cell has two plates. The active material of the positive plate is Ni (OH) 4 and the negative plate is of iron (Fe). The electrolyte is a solution of potassium hydroxide (KOH) with a small addition of lithium hydrate (LiOH) which increases the capacity of the cell.
Negative plates are connected to the container. Since a small quantity of electrolyte is used, therefore, it is quite compact. Since a single cell produces a very low amount of current and voltage, many cells are connected in series and parallel to increase current and voltage rating of a nickel-iron battery respectively.
Since a single cell produces a very low amount of current and voltage, many cells are connected in series and parallel to increase current and voltage rating of a nickel-iron battery respectively. When the battery is fully charged, its positive plate is of Ni (OH) 4 and its negative plate is of iron (Fe).
However, if we made a tear-down analysis of that battery, we would observe positive plates that appear to be in good shape, but the active material looks to be softening and muddy. In a battery suffering from acid stratification, the muddy appearance may be concentrated on the bottom of the plate.
And how the NiFe battery was hence in effect an ‘oxygen lift cell’. To put things differently, the active material in the positive plates was ‘super oxidized’ in a charged cell. While the negative plates were in a ‘spongy, or deoxidized state’ at that point. Edison’s NiFe batteries shipped in a discharged state.
A battery with highly sulphated negative plates will eventually only accept a surface charge, resulting in a false positive high state of charge readings. In this condition, a battery may appear fully charged but have a very low capacity, as expressed in Amp Hour (AH) or Reserve Capacity (RC).
