This special issue is dedicated to the field of Space Solar Power Station (SSPS). Proposed by the American scientist Peter Glaser, SSPS is a grand idea to build an extra-large solar power station on the Earth orbit and to transmit electricity to the surface ground wirelessly, such as through microwaves.
Recently, a new design for a space solar power station has been proposed which utilizes an Orb-Shaped Membrane Energy Gathering Array, this type of design has been coined the SSPS-OMEGA . Specifically, the SSPS-OMEGA is a modular spherical spacecraft that uses a light-weight system to concentrate and collect sunlight via photovoltaic cells.
The solar array system supplies energy to the space robots, enabling them to perform subsequent assembly procedures. During the assembly of the Space Solar Power Station, the antenna modules should be assembled immediately following the advance solar array modules at the center of the station.
In the early assembly process of the International Space Station, the form of rendezvous and docking was mainly used, and the modes of robot-assisted assembly and manual assembly by astronauts were used in the later stage.
Facilities system supporting assembly procedures, which include a Reusable Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle, orbital transfer and space robots, is introduced. An integrated assembly scheme utilizing space robots to realize this platform SSPS concept is presented.
