Now, connect two batteries in a series-aiding configuration, to provide approximately 12 volts across the potentiometer. Measure the total battery voltage, and then measure the voltage between the same two points on the potentiometer (wiper and negative side). Divide the potentiometer's measured output voltage by the measured total voltage.
These experiments are designed to introduce you to several important concepts of electricity related to DC circuits. Actually, any size batteries will suffice for this experiment, but it is recommended to have at least two different voltages available to make it more interesting.
For both the voltmeter and battery tester, solder a wire to TP1 and a separate wire to pin 1 of P3 (which is GND) (see the blue and yellow wires in the photo above). The wire will be used to make contact with the two terminals of the battery or where the voltage is measured. You also need to 3D print the two probes. The STL file is attached below.
Measuring potential difference or voltage is done with a voltmeter (which measures in volts). Unlike ammeters measuring current at a single point in the circuit, voltmeters compare the electric potential at two different points in a circuit. Voltmeters are hooked up in parallel in a circuit. There are many electrical components used in this lab.
To make a similar battery in the lab you will need: 12 pencil leads (2B or softer), one for each cell, or you could use school laboratory 'carbon' rods, or salvage them by carefully dismantling old batteries.
