The term "solar collector" commonly refers to a device for solar hot water heating, but may refer to large power generating installations such as solar parabolic troughs and solar towers or non- water heating devices such as solar cookers or solar air heaters. Solar thermal collectors are either non-concentrating or concentrating.
Solar thermal collectors can be divided into four categories as per their applicability in the range of temperatures: (i) Flat plate collectors (FPCs), (ii) Evacuated tube collectors (ETCs), (iii) Concentrating collectors, (iv) Hybrid (combination of two technological advancements) collectors .
High-temperature collectors concentrate sunlight using mirrors or lenses and are used for fulfilling heating requirements up to 400ᴼC/20 bar pressure in industries. Table 1 Temperature range of solar thermal technologies 1.1 Types of Solar Thermal Technology As mentioned above, solar thermal technologies use various collectors to generate heat.
Obviously, the application of a solar thermal collector typology depends on the temperature reached by its HTF. Low-temperature collectors are usually employed for domestic hot water (DHW) preparation or space heating (and cooling) applications. Middle-temperature collectors are often adopted for industrial application.
Concentrating solar thermal collectors can be assumed to be the most appropriate option for delivering energy at high temperatures which is not achievable with flat plate collectors. Because of their higher temperature outputs, they can be considered more suitable for greenhouse heating .
The type of solar thermal collector required to drive an absorption chiller critically depends on its number of effects. Low-temperature solar thermal collectors such as flat plate or evacuated tube collectors (FPCs and ETCs) are suitable to provide hot water to single-effect absorption chillers.
