Polyphenylene Sulfide-Based Solid-State Separator for Limited Li Metal Battery. In this work, a thin and dense lithiated polyphenylene sulfide-based solid state separator (PPS-SSS) prepared by a solvent-free process in pilot stage is proposed, and the results promote the Li metal battery toward practicality.
Separators play a critical role in the safety and electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the commercial polyolefin-based separators encounter poor thermal stability and flame retardance, which have aroused severe safety issues.
More importantly, the LiFePO4/Li cell using the polyphenylene sulfide separator shows satisfactory cycling stability (0.064% capacity fading per cycle at 2 C) and superior rate performance. These desirable performances suggest that the polyphenylene sulfide separator is very attractive for high safety and high-power density LIBs.
The effect of binary diluent composition on the polyphenylene sulfide separator performance is investigated by both computational simulation and experimental studies respectively. The as-prepared polyphenylene sulfide separator exhibits tortuous and highly porous structure, which endows the separator superior electrolyte wettability.
In this work, a thin and dense lithiated polyphenylene sulfide-based solid state separator (PPS-SSS) prepared by a solvent-free process in pilot stage is proposed. Moreover, the PPS surface is functionalized to immobilize the anions, increasing the Li + transference number to 0.8−0.9, and widening the electrochemical potential window (EPW > 5.1 V).
