The current research of battery energy storage system (BESS) fault is fragmentary, which is one of the reasons for low accuracy of fault warning and diagnosis in monitoring and controlling system of BESS. The paper has summarized the possible faults occurred in BESS, sorted out in the aspects of inducement, mechanism and consequence.
We review the possible faults occurred in battery energy storage system. The current research of battery energy storage system (BESS) fault is fragmentary, which is one of the reasons for low accuracy of fault warning and diagnosis in monitoring and controlling system of BESS.
This study is the first to investigate the risk factors and protection design of battery modules with varying voltage levels in the context of external short circuit (ESC) faults. Three types of module ESC tests are carried out, including ESC without protection, ESC with weak links protection, and ESC with fuse protection.
Using these battery energy storage systems alongside power generation technologies such as gas-fired Combined Heat and Power (CHP), standby diesel generation, and UPS systems will provide increased resilience mitigating a potential loss of operational costs, whilst protecting your brand.
These have proved that the ESC protection method of designing weak links within the battery module is only applicable to low-voltage battery systems. When the voltage of the battery module is high enough, the integration of fuses with arc extinguishing capability inside the battery module is necessary (e.g., test 4).
Many accidents of battery energy storage system (BESS) have been reported worldwide, some of which have caused irreparable consequences. System safety problems should be addressed in particular to pass the last mile in the development of BESS .
