Standard Army batteries are commonly defined via Military Performance Specifications (MIL-PRF) which define performance, operating requirements, operational environment, interfaces, and interoperability requirements. These specifications are published (usually with unlimited distribution), and can be found on ASSIST by going to ASSIST QuickSearch.
The most common rechargeable batteries used in military applications come in three chemistries: Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), Lithium-Ion (Li-ion), Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP), and Lithium-polymer (Li-poly).
Lithium metal batteries were first marketed in early 1970, primarily for military use. They have a very high gravimetric and volumetric energy density compared to all other batteries – five to ten times the energy of other battery systems.
Lithium primary (i.e. non-rechargeable) batteries include both active and reserve batteries. Reserve batteries remain in an inactive condition until needed, at which time the electrolyte is introduced into the cell.
