Lead-acid batteries are commonly found in Gell cells, and the types of absorbed glass mats are known as valve-regulated lead-acid batteries . To charge a battery with alternating current, we need a reducing transformer, a rectifier, a filter circuit and a regulator to keep the voltage constant.
If you only have DC power and charge the lead-acid battery, you can do this by applying this DC voltage to a DC regulator and some additional circuits before using the lead acid. Car battery is also a lead acid battery (Figure 1), as you can see in the block diagram above, DC voltage is supplied to the DC voltage regulator.
When a lead-acid battery charges, an electrochemical reaction occurs. Lead sulfate at the negative electrode changes into lead. At the positive terminal, lead converts into lead oxide. Hydrogen gas is produced as a by-product. This process enables effective energy storage and usage within the battery.
The chemical reactions that occur during the charging of a lead-acid battery involve the conversion of lead sulfate back to lead dioxide and sponge lead while producing sulfuric acid. – Conversion of lead sulfate to lead dioxide. – Conversion of lead sulfate to sponge lead. – Production of sulfuric acid. – Gassing (oxygen and hydrogen evolution).
For lead-acid batteries, the ideal charging voltage is typically around 2.4 to 2.45 volts per cell. Monitoring helps detect unusual voltage spikes, indicating possible overcharging. Regularly checking voltage can prevent sulfation, which occurs when lead sulfate crystals build up on the battery plates due to undercharging or overcharging.
It consists of lead dioxide as the positive plate, sponge lead as the negative plate, and sulfuric acid as the electrolyte. According to the Battery University, lead-acid batteries are the oldest and most widely used rechargeable batteries. They have been essential for various applications, including automotive and industrial uses.

What amount of current should I use to charge a 12V car battery?
There is a rumor unspoken rule : the slower charge the better battery, it seems charging current is around C/10 and <= 10A is more favourable to prolong lead acid battery. However, better read the battery specs and datasheet to find out. Example: Your battery capacity is 80Ah, C/10=8A <= 10A, then maximum charging current is 8A.
