EDPR announced on Wednesday (26 July) that it had secured the two-hour 50MW BESS asset from the services of Tupa Energy, a British-based battery and solar developer.
The firm agreed a deal with InfraRed Capital Partners to acquire Statera Energy earlier this month (6 November). Statera, a UK-based battery energy storage and flexible energy generation developer and operator, will now gain access to growth capital to accelerate the deployment of new assets across the nation.
Investor EQT Infrastructure has acquired UK battery storage developer-operator Statera, the latest in a flurry of deals in the UK market.
This first storage system developed by EDPR will be located in Kent, England, and has been acquired from Tupa Energy, a British company specializing in utility-scale battery storage, as well as other technologies (such as solar). This project is expected to become operational by the end of 2024.
Brookfield, another global infrastructure investor, bought Banks Renewables last month; private equity firm KKR acquired Zenobē in September; and asset manager Searchlight acquired Gresham House, the manager of the Gresham House Energy Storage Fund plc (GRID) and other clean energy vehicles, in July.
The acquisition of this UK-based BESS asset will support EDPR in achieving its strategy of having over 500MW of storage capacity available by 2026. This is expected to be achieved via co-location whereas a smaller portion will be from smaller assets such as the Kent BESS project.
