The most common chemical energy storage systems include hydrogen, synthetic natural gas, and solar fuel storage. Hydrogen fuel energy is a clean and abundant renewable fuel that is safe to use. The hydrogen energy can be produced from electrolysis or sunlight through photocatalytic water splitting (16,17).
Mechanical energy storage systems are classified into the following types based on their working principles: pressurized gas, forced springs, kinetic energy, and potential energy. Mechanical energy storage systems have the advantage of being able to readily deliver the energy whenever required for mechanical works.
Electrostatic energy storage (EES) systems can be divided into two main types: electrostatic energy storage systems and magnetic energy storage systems.
Thermochemical energy storage systems can be classified in various ways, one of which is illustrated in Fig. 6. Thermochemical energy storage systems exhibit higher storage densities than sensible and latent TES systems, making them more compact. This is a beneficial characteristic in applications where storage space is limited or expensive.
