We cannot measure the potential of a single half cell, we can only measure the potential difference between two different half cells. To compare the ability of different metals to lose electrons, a standard electrode is needed that can be connected to other half cells.
The cell potential is the way in which we can measure how much voltage exists between the two half cells of a battery. We will explain how this is done and what components allow us to find the voltage that exists in an electrochemical cell.
