Tunisia has selected four photovoltaic projects totalling 500 MW in the first phase of the 1,700 MW call for tenders, with the best tariff being 0.029 euros per kWh.
The latter companies already have a footprint in Tunisia, with Voltalia announcing plans to build a 130MW solar project in the country in May, and Scatec collaborating with Aeolus to build a 120MW project i n August. The second tender calls for two projects of unspecified capacity in Hechain, Gabes governate and Khobna, Sidi Bouzid governate.
First utility-scale photovoltaic plant (10 MW, in Tozeur) was commissioned in 2019 on German money. Tunisia aims to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The country currently gets only 3% to 6% of its electricity from renewable sources, mostly from wind and hydro. Solar energy capacity is at 35 megawatts (MW).
“The Government is expressing its firm commitment to successfully develop the 120MW Kairouan PV Solar project, which represents a significant step forward in the country’s energy transition,” said Tunisia’s Head of Government, Ahmed Hachani.
