Lithium-ion batteries remain the dominant technology for powering EVs and the longevity of these batteries is uncertain 41. Most new EVs come with warranties of 8 years and 100,000 miles for their batteries 42 and most research anticipates a lifespan of approximately 8–10 years 43.
While battery prices have plummeted about 90% over the past 15 years, batteries still account for almost a third of the price of a new EV. So, current and future EV commuters may be happy to learn that many extra miles await them.
They repeat this cycle rapidly many times to learn quickly if a new design is good or not for life expectancy, among other qualities. This is not a good way to predict the life expectancy of EV batteries, especially for people who own EVs for everyday commuting, according to the study published Dec. 9 in Nature Energy.
The current research on power battery life is mainly based on single batteries. As known, the power batteries employed in EVs are composed of several single batteries. When a cell is utilized in groups, the performance of the battery will change from more consistent to more dispersed with the deepening of the degree of application.
Industrial sources tend to be more optimistic about their products, with Tesla claiming that their batteries are designed to outlast the vehicle 44, and Nissan reporting that almost all of the batteries that they have ever produced are still in use in the EVs they sold over the last 12 years 45.
