A capacitor is an energy storage device that is used for drawing a high current for forming and welding operations. Capacitors can be connected in parallel depending upon the energy requirement for the material-processing operation. The capacitor is a differential-mode filter of sorts and can be used to eliminate EMI.
Capacitors are defined as electronic devices with two or more than two parallel arranged conductive plates in which energy is stored for long intervals and released when it is required over a time span in a controlled environment . These plates are separated by insulators suspended or dispersed in the electrolytic cell.
Structural capacitors are structural materials (commonly polymer-matrix structural composites) that have been modified in order to render the capacitor function for the purpose of electrical energy storage. They are a type of multifunctional structural material.
The higher the capacitance of a capacitor, the better and the more energy it is able to store. To improve the capacitance of the capacitors, electrodes of large surface area is required; aside from that, materials (dielectric) that have high permittivity and that can reduce the spacing between the electrodes are required.
Due to the strong effect of the composite fabrication method on the structural capacitor performance, the structure development should be performed with the involvement of composite engineers. Structural development should be conducted with inclusion of the electrical contacts in the overall design.
Capacitor stores energy in its electric field. Structurally, a capacitor consists of a pair of conducting plates separated by a layer of insulator (or dielectric). The plates maybe made of aluminum foil while the dielectric maybe air, ceramic, paper, mica, or oil as illustrated in Fig. 4.22.
