The wet process is widely used for manufacturing battery separators, especially polymeric materials. Polymer Solution Preparation: The first step in the wet process involves preparing a polymer solution. The selected polymer, such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), is dissolved in a suitable solvent to create a homogeneous solution.
The conventional wet electrode manufacturing process consists of mixing, coating, drying, calendaring, post-drying, and cell assembly steps, as shown in Fig. 1 [2, 3]. The wet process follows the essential step of a slurry formation consisting of active materials, binders, conductive additives, and solvents.
While other methods can be used for wet and dry battery electrode technology, the dry pressing method includes using a hydraulic press to compress dry electrode material into the required shape and density. The electrode that results is then trimmed to the proper size and shape.
China produces around 80% of the world’s separators. Out of these, 70% are wet process separators and 30% are process separators. As NMC battery are targeting higher energy density, manufacturers are mostly using wet separators. This is due to wet separators are 30%-40% thinner than dry separators, it can save more space for other components.
As for LFP batteries, both wet and dry separators are used by cell manufacturers. Although in the beginning wet separators was more common in LFP, the demand for more affordable cells has become the key factor that driving manufacturers to opt for dry separators.
The wet coating also enables the production of thicker electrodes, resulting in higher energy–density batteries. However, using solvents in the wet coating can result in environmental and safety concerns, and the drying and pressing steps can increase the processing time and cost [16, 17, 18].
