The capacitance value of a sensor is given by: Where A is the complete area of the entire sensor and associated routing and d is the distance between the sensor/routing and the surrounding conductors.
The voltage is the inverse value of the distance of the two plates (d) from each other. A capacitive sensor then carries out a calculation using the formula C = eA/d. As an ideal example for a measuring procedure: e for a vacuum has the value “1”, and the sensor makes use of this fact. Every other material has a higher dielectric number.
The equivalent capacitance is given by plates of a parallel-plate capacitor as shown in Figure 5.10.3. Figure 5.10.3 Capacitor filled with two different dielectrics. Each plate has an area A and the plates are separated by a distance d. Compute the capacitance of the system.
The range of a capacitance sensor is dictated by the diameter, or area, of the sensor. The larger the area, the larger the measurement range. Measurement range is typically specified starting when the probe is touching the target. At this point the output from the amplifier is zero volts.
This error can be eliminated by using two capacitive sensors to measure a single part. Capacitive sensors are placed on either side of the part to be measured. By measuring the parts from both sides, curvature and deformities are taken into account in the measurement and their effects are not included in the thickness readings.
• A capacitor is a device that stores electric charge and potential energy. The capacitance C of a capacitor is the ratio of the charge stored on the capacitor plates to the the potential difference between them: (parallel) This is equal to the amount of energy stored in the capacitor. The E surface. 0 is the electric field without dielectric.
