Two separate control algorithms, cell voltage-based and cell SOC-based are developed for the proposed cell balancing scheme. A comparative study between these two control logics revealed that the SOC based control logic is more effective for the proposed cell balancing scheme in terms of balancing speed.
One of the major aspects of a BMS for LIB pack is an optimum cell balancing scheme in terms of balancing speed, circuit footprint, weight, cost and ease of control logic. Considering these factors, a DC-DC dual converter based active cell balancing topology with reduced number of active components and power switches is proposed in this study.
So, this study evaluates the battery balancing control strategy of the DC-DC converter-based balancing system. From this study, it is concluded that energy storage systems must have control and management facilities for reliable and efficient use even if they have the best battery technology.
Results and Discussion The proposed active cell balancing scheme is capable to provide C2P balancing during charging period and auxiliary lead-acid battery to LIB cell balancing during discharging period.
The proposed topologies are faster in balancing the battery pack compared to the existing research. In 39 an inductor-based cell balancing model with 4 cells, and 6 switches is proposed. The cell balancing process is designed from layer to layer in the model, it has taken 900 s to balance all the cells in the battery pack.
The use of auxiliary lead-acid battery for providing balancing energy during discharge period reduced the number of active components, power switches, control complexity, speed and life of LIB pack as P2C balancing is eliminated.
